How to Name a Medieval Kingdom
Real medieval kingdoms drew their names from geography, founders, or sacred sites. "England" came from the Angles. "Francia" from the Franks. "Aragon" from a river. For a believable fantasy kingdom, anchor the name in place, people, or power:
- Place — a feature of the land: a vale, a march, a ridge, a fen.
- People — a founding house, a tribe, or a dynastic name.
- Power — a relic, a god, or an iron mountain that defines the realm.
Two-syllable compounds ("Iron-vale", "Frost-ward", "Raven-keep") sound the most medieval because Old English and Norse worked the same way.
